Exterior grade MDF is an excellent material for the construction of advertising hoardings, traffic signs and small advertisement panels by virtue of its high stiffness, good dimensional stability in varying atmospheric conditions and smooth surfaces for lettering by sign writing, stencilling or screen printing.

Large hoardings must be constructed from sufficiently thick MDF sheets with adequate support to prevent drumming when exposed to high winds. The fixing system should allow for up to 2.5 mm lateral movement over 1 m in the plane of the board to accommodate changes in dimensions as a result of likely moisture content changes.

Particular attention should be given to sealing the edges of the MDF panels and any MDF exposed around the fixing points to the backing frame.
